There is nothing more disgusting than sticky floors. And when you’re in business, it is a surefire way to turn off your clients and guests. Get yourself out of this sticky, disgusting situation with these helpful and effective tips on how to clean sticky floors!
In general, there are three common situations that leave floors with a sticky, disgusting film:
– Something – often sugary like soda or juice – spills on the floor
– An accumulation of grease, moisture and dirt and other debris left on the floor too long
– The incorrect use of cleaning agents
Here are a few ways to resolve floor stickiness:
If the stickiness of the floor is due to a recent spill, wipe it off right away with a paper towel or rags. When liquids get spilled on your floors, it is important to wipe off the spill as quickly as possible so the liquids do not have time to seep in and stick to your floors. Use paper towels, floor rags, or shop towels for this initial stage of the cleanup so the sticky residue does not end up on your wet mop.
If the sticky floor is due to an accumulation of moisture and tracked-in dirt, start by soaking a wet mop in warm water then wring it out until it is just slightly wet. Alternately, you may soak old floor rags in warm water and run over the floor surface. Leave the layer of warm water to settle on the dirty floor to loosen residue and make it easier to remove.
Using a wet mop, clean off the floor with a liquid cleaner that is suitable for your floor type. Wipe a liberal amount of cleaning solution on the floor with your wet mop. Go over the spill as many times as necessary. Replace the water-cleaner solution when the water gets too murky that you cannot see the bottom of the bucket anymore.
Clean mop thoroughly to remove every last trace of the spill. In between washes, wash, rinse, and wring out mop thoroughly to completely remove the liquid and avoid spreading it all over.
‘Rinse’ off floor with fresh water. Remove cleaning solution by mopping clean water over the area until the last of the solution is gone.
Wipe off excess moisture with towels/rags. Completely dry off your floors with towels/rags or a dry mop. Excessive moisture can damage your floors so this last step is crucial.
How to Prevent Floors from Getting Sticky
Wipe off spills promptly. The longer the spills stay on the surface, the harder and the more challenging they are to remove.
Do not use detergent to clean the floors. Most detergents leave sticky residue on the floor that is not only annoying but can attract and trap even more dirt onto the floor.
When using a cleaning solution, make sure it is diluted to the right water-cleaner ratio. Excessive cleaner is one of the most common culprits of floor stickiness post-cleanup so make sure you follow manufacturer instructions on dilution.
Never mop with dirty water and always do a final ‘rinse’ with plain water. The final rinse ensures that there are no residues of both the spills and the cleaning solution left on the floor.
Dry off floors properly. Properly drying the floors not only makes sure that the water does not seep deeper into your flooring and ruin it, but drying off floors is an additional measure to ensure that no residue is left on the surface.
Keep your wet mops clean and your dry mops dry. Make sure to keep a good set of wet and dry mops handy. Your first weapon against spills is a sturdy, full mop head.
Provide a layer of floor protection. Guard your floors against tracked-in dirt, moisture, and spills with a good set of commercial floor mats. The right kind of floor mats should trap in dirt and other debris from the bottoms of shoes, as well as make sure spills and moisture do not end up on your floor’s surface.
