With the variety of potential dangers your business is trying to protect its employees and customers from (such as food poisoning in the restaurant industry, bed bugs in the hospitality industry, hazardous chemicals in industrial businesses, etc.), one thing that might go easily unnoticed is your floors.
Sure, you’ll do your part in making sure they stay clean, but there’s one very important and potentially costly detail about your floors that you may be forgetting and that’s how slip-resistant they are, or rather, how slip-resistant they aren’t.
Here are the slip-and-fall statistics and facts you should know.
– Slips and falls are often due to wet and low-traction floors.
– Falling puts individuals at great risk for a head injury or broken bones – approximately 1 out of 5 people.
– A simple solution to prevent individuals from slipping and falling in your business space is to invest in floor mats.
– The best floor mats to invest in are those that have been certified as “high-traction” by the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI), like the mats provided by Golden West.
Background on the NFSI
This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has been around since 1997 to help prevent accidents due to slips, trips and falls. This focus on protecting the safety of individuals from accidents related to flooring allows them to test and certify products, develop floor safety standards and educate businesses and organizations on how they can better protect others from slipping, tripping and falling.
NFSI Floor Mat Safety and Traction Standards
While there are other measures involved in preventing accidents on your floors, one substantial strategy you can implement in your business space is investing in NFSI-certified “high-traction” floor mats. Floor mats provide a barrier between the sole of a shoe and the floor and are often designed to have some level of traction. Traction provides resistance so that an individual doesn’t step directly on what would cause them to slip but also so that the mat itself doesn’t slide as someone walks over it. A floor mat that has the wrong transitional coefficient of friction (TCOF) can still put an individual at risk of slipping and falling.
Therefore, a mat that has been certified by the NFSI means the mat has the proper TCOF to protect an individual from slipping and falling as they walk across the mat.
The 101-C Testing Method
When a mat’s backing undergoes evaluation by the NFSI, its success at preventing slip-and-fall accidents is measured by a TCOF of 0.50 based on the “average stride taken while walking.” Mats that are certified by the NFSI have a 0.50 (TCOF) label on them.
